What is HIPAA?

The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) is a federal law that sets national standards for the protection of your personal health information. This information, known as Protected Health Information (PHI), includes your mental health history, diagnoses, medications, treatment plans, and any other sensitive details shared with us during the course of your care.

HIPAA ensures that your information is handled with care, used only for appropriate purposes, and shared only when necessary or when you give consent. At Zephyr Health, we take this responsibility seriously and have systems in place to keep your data safe and secure.

Your Rights Under HIPAA

As a client of Zephyr Health, you have important rights when it comes to how your health information is accessed, shared, or corrected. These rights help give you control and peace of mind regarding your privacy.

  • Access Your Records: You can request to see or receive a copy of your mental health records in writing.
  • Request Corrections: If you believe there’s an error in your records, you have the right to ask for a correction.
  • Limit Use or Disclosure: You can request limits on how we use or share your PHI, such as not sharing it with certain people or organizations.
  • Revoke Consent: You can withdraw prior permission to share your information at any time, except where it has already been used.
  • Restrict Certain Disclosures: You may ask us not to disclose information about services you’ve paid for out-of-pocket.
  • Opt Out of Communications: You can choose not to receive fundraising or marketing communications from us.

Filing a Complaint

If you feel that your privacy rights under HIPAA have been violated, you have the right to file a complaint. You can submit it directly to Zephyr Health’s compliance team or to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Filing a complaint will never affect the quality of care you receive. We encourage you to speak up if you have concerns so we can address them promptly and transparently.
